What it does

This bill cancels a 1948 federal law. That law gave New York State power over Seneca Nation territory. It lets the Seneca Nation run its own courts and police. The U.S. Attorney General and the Seneca Nation must both agree in writing. The Attorney General must talk to both the tribe and New York State first.

Who it affects

Seneca Nation citizens would have their own tribal courts and police. People and companies on Seneca land would follow tribal law instead of state law.

One thing to notice

The federal government took control of Seneca law enforcement in 1948. This bill would give that power back to the Seneca Nation. It requires the Attorney General and the tribe to both say yes.
