What it does
The bill requires tax-exempt groups to report foreign funding. Groups with $200,000 or more in annual money must report. Groups with $500,000 or more in assets must report. Groups must say how much money comes from foreign people and foreign companies. Groups must break down the money by country. Groups can trust what donors say about where they are from. Groups do not have to trust a donor if they know the donor lied.
Who it affects
Tax-exempt groups like nonprofits and think tanks must follow this rule. People and leaders in government can see which foreign sources fund these groups.
One thing to notice
Groups with less than $200,000 in annual money do not have to report. Groups with less than $500,000 in assets do not have to report. Foreign money given to smaller groups stays private.
