What it does
The bill lets homeowners deduct 15% of costs to fix up their home. The most they can deduct is $7,500 per home over their lifetime. They can do this for an older family member (65 or older). They can also do this for a disabled family member or a caregiver. The deduction gets smaller for higher earners. For lower-income households, the deduction becomes money the government sends back.
Who it affects
Homeowners who fix up homes get lower taxes or cash back. Renters do not benefit because they do not own homes. Lower-income homeowners may get cash back.
One thing to notice
The bill helps homeowners but not renters. Homeowners in expensive areas get more help because fixing up costs more.
