What it does
The bill lets the Secretary of Health and Human Services fine for-profit hospitals. The fine is $10,000 per day when safety rules are broken twice in two years. The failure must put patients in immediate danger. Nonprofit hospitals are not fined under this rule. The Secretary must post fines on a public website.
Who it affects
Patients at for-profit hospitals may get stronger protection. For-profit hospitals face new fines. Nonprofit hospitals are not affected.
One thing to notice
For-profit hospitals and nonprofit hospitals are treated differently. Only for-profit hospitals can be fined.
