What it does
This bill gives more federal money to school districts. State education agencies can apply for grants up to $7.5 million over 5 years. Magnet schools use free bus rides and lottery systems. They bring together students from different racial and economic backgrounds. Districts must show they mixed their schools and raised test scores within 2 years or return the money.
Who it affects
School districts and state education agencies can apply for the money. Students of color in segregated schools may benefit most. The program is voluntary, so districts choose whether to apply.
One thing to notice
Only agencies that did not get this money in the past 3 years can apply. The same districts may not get funded twice in a row.
