What it does
The bill sets up a program to pay fire workers who got sick from PFAS. PFAS are chemicals in foam and gear used to fight fires. Fire workers or their families can get $50,000 to $250,000. The amount depends on their illness and years of work. A 10% tax on PFAS products pays for the program. A 10% tax on money from PFAS lawsuits also pays for it.
Who it affects
Fire workers who got sick from PFAS can claim money without proving a firm did wrong. Firms that make or sell PFAS products will pay the tax.
One thing to notice
The bill does not set a total spending limit. If more fire workers claim money than the program has, the Secretary can pay them less.
