What it does
The bill stops the Defense Department from taking back split pay. This happens when former soldiers get injury benefits from the VA. For former soldiers with military pay, the Defense Department can only take back 25% of monthly pay. The former soldier can ask to pay faster. The Defense Department must talk to the former soldier about ability to pay. It must give 90 days notice before taking money. It can waive the debt if the former soldier faces hardship. The same rules apply to voluntary split pay and voluntary split incentives.
