What it does
The bill lets wireless carriers send emergency alerts using satellites. Carriers must tell the FCC if they join within 60 days. Carriers must tell customers if they use satellites. Carriers cannot charge extra. The bill protects carriers from lawsuits if alerts fail or data is shared.
Who it affects
Citizens could get emergency warnings through satellites when ground systems fail. Wireless carriers can choose to use satellites or not. Emergency responders may get access to customer phone numbers and location.
