What it does

This bill caps federal income tax on public pensions. A retiree with a public pension pays tax on other income plus $10,000 maximum. Married couples where both get public pensions can add $20,000 instead. The rule starts for taxes filed after December 31, 2025.

Who it affects

Public employees and retirees who get pensions from state and local governments get lower federal taxes. The lost tax money must come from somewhere else. This reduces money for other public services.

One thing to notice

The $10,000 and $20,000 caps do not grow with inflation. They will be worth less money in future years.
