What it does
The bill lets workers withdraw unused money from transportation benefit accounts. Workers can take out money one time. They have 6 months after the law passes to do it. The amount is based on the highest balance in their account. That balance is measured between March 13, 2020 and December 31, 2023. The withdrawn money counts as taxable income. The bill does not change how transportation benefits work in the future.
Who it affects
Workers who have money stuck in transportation benefit accounts are affected. These accounts had use-it-or-lose-it rules during the pandemic. Many people did not commute to work during that time.
One thing to notice
Workers have only 6 months after the law passes to withdraw the money. If they wait longer, they lose the chance to get it.
