What it does
The bill requires big gig platforms to take payroll taxes out of contractor paychecks. These are taxes for Social Security and Medicare. Right now, contractors pay both the employer and worker parts themselves. The bill makes large platforms pay the employer part instead. Platforms must do this if they have 100 million dollars in yearly revenue. They must also have at least 10,000 contractors.
Who it affects
Gig workers on large platforms will see taxes taken from their pay automatically. Large gig companies will have to withhold taxes and pay more in taxes themselves. Small gig platforms will not have to do this.
One thing to notice
Large platforms may lower what they pay contractors to cover the new tax costs. Contractors might earn less take-home pay even though they get more Social Security credit.
