What it does
The bill stops people from bringing live sloths into the U.S. Dead sloths for research can still come in. Live sloths for accredited zoos can come in under certain rules. People who break this law face fines up to $20,000 per violation. Criminal fines go up to $100,000. Violators lose wildlife import licenses and lose the animals.
Who it affects
The bill affects people and companies that import sloths. It protects wild sloth populations from trafficking. Research scientists and accredited zoos can still import sloths if they follow the rules.
One thing to notice
The Secretary of the Interior decides what counts as research. This gives one person power over who can import sloths. The government can take sloths without paying the importer back.
