What it does
This bill changes how Medicare pays for mobile stroke units. Mobile stroke units are vans with tools to find and treat strokes in the field. Medicare will pay them the same way it pays hospital ERs. The bill adds a 5% bonus when these units meet patients on the road. The bonus applies in rural areas or when picking up patients from rural places. The bill also says these costs do not count toward hospital inpatient costs.
Who it affects
People in rural areas gain faster stroke care through mobile units. Hospitals and van services that run mobile stroke units may get more money. Rural hospitals and health systems may gain from the payment bonus.
One thing to notice
The bill gives a 5% bonus to mobile stroke units in rural areas. This bonus may push hospitals to send mobile stroke units to areas with few ERs.
