What it does
The bill tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to review fuel economy standards. It does this if gas prices rise very fast. It adds money penalties for car makers that miss fuel economy rules. One penalty is $25 per car for each 0.1 mpg missed. Another penalty is $50.
Who it affects
Car makers must pay more money if cars do not meet fuel economy rules. People who buy gas may pay less if cars use less fuel.
One thing to notice
The bill lets the government review fuel economy rules if gas prices spike. It does not say the rules must get stricter.
