What it does
Anyone selling a used car made after 1997 must fix the airbags. Or they must tell the buyer in writing that airbags do not work. The seller must also put a notice on the windshield. If a seller breaks this rule on purpose, they can go to prison for up to 10 years. The government can fine sellers up to $25,000 if someone dies or gets paralyzed.
Who it affects
People who buy used cars learn if airbags are broken before they buy. Sellers of used cars must follow the new rules or face fines and prison time.
One thing to notice
The bill lets sellers tell buyers the airbags do not work. Buyers then choose whether to buy a car with broken airbags.
