What it does
The bill lets the President stop the federal gas tax for up to 60 days. This happens when fuel supply drops or prices spike badly. The President can extend it to 120 days. The government replaces lost tax money from general funds. Road and environmental programs still get paid. This power ends December 31, 2028.
Who it affects
People who buy gas get lower prices at the pump during the emergency. All taxpayers pay for the lost tax money through general funds.
One thing to notice
The President can declare an emergency and suspend the tax without Congress voting first. Congress only finds out after it starts or when the President asks to extend it.
