What it does

The bill creates a tax credit for people who rent their main home. Renters can get back 8.5 to 11 percent of rent paid each year. The credit caps at $4,000. The credit starts in 2027 and ends in 2034. People earning under $150,000 per year can use it.

Who it affects

Renters who earn under $150,000 per year get the credit. Families with children get a bigger credit than people without kids.

One thing to notice

The credit is capped at fair-market rent set by the government. In expensive cities, renters paying more than that cap get no credit on the extra.
