What it does
This bill sets up a new mortgage program. Teachers, police, firefighters, paramedics, 911 workers, and child care workers can use it. Prison staff can also use it. People in these jobs can get a mortgage with zero down payment. They pay no monthly insurance fees. They must buy their first home and take a housing class. They must work in the job for 4 years. They must stay in the job for 1 year after buying.
Who it affects
Teachers, police, firefighters, paramedics, 911 workers, child care workers, and prison staff who want to buy a home. These workers often earn less money and save slowly.
One thing to notice
The program runs for 5 years and then stops. Congress must vote to keep it going. Borrowers pay an upfront fee that can be more than 3 percent.
