What it does

The bill sets federal fuel taxes to zero. This lasts from when it passes through December 31, 2026. It says fuel producers and dealers must give all tax savings to customers right away. The Treasury Secretary can fine companies that do not pass savings along. After December 31, 2026, fuel taxes return to their normal rate.

Who it affects

People who buy gas or diesel could pay less. This happens if companies pass along the full tax cut. Fuel producers, refiners, and gas stations would not pay federal fuel taxes during this time. The bill does not force companies to lower prices. Savings may not reach customers.

One thing to notice

The bill has no strong way to make sure fuel companies cut prices for customers. On January 1, 2027, fuel taxes jump back to full amount, which could cause prices to spike.
