What it does
The bill gives $5 million each year from 2027 to 2031. State library agencies get the money and pass it to school districts. School libraries can use grants to stay open during summer. Libraries must run reading activities for at least 6 weeks. The grants go to schools where at least 50% of young students read below their grade level.
Who it affects
Students in poor neighborhoods get more access to libraries and reading help during summer. School districts and state library agencies run the program. Community groups may help run reading activities.
One thing to notice
The bill ties library grants to schools that serve summer meals. This may push schools to keep lunch programs running.
